The Birthday Party "Drunk On The Pope's Blood-16 minutes of Sheer Hell!!!!!" + "It's Still Living"

2009 brought the deaths of many truly unique characters and influential geniuses I grew up surrounded by. Jim Carroll, Roland S. Howard and the mythical Ron Asheton...just to name a few.

Having only met Roland a couple times, he is yet another great we lost this year who I despise growing old without. enclosed in this post is some of his extraordinary live work with The Birthday Party. Delivering their sonic murder in all of it's live glory. Needless to say, his work with These Immortal Souls, Crime + the City Solution, and Lydia Lunch with "Shotgun Wedding" as well as "Honeymoon In Red". were absolutely crippling as well. To try and give a full description of his entire discography would never be complete, as he brought more than can be explained in words through his music.

Here's to tonight and havin' a drink to bring in the New Year and celebrate their lives.
Only to be drunk on the pope's blood.

Released in '82, although originally released as a 12" with Lydia Lunch's "The Agony Is The Ecstasy" on the flip side.

The Birthday Party "Junkyard"

After the Boys Next Door, Nick Cave went straight into one of post-punk's true apocalypse leaders, The Birthday Party. "Junkyard" (w/2 bonus tracks) was one of the pioneers in the noise brigade pack, with the sounds of King Ink's footsteps in the swamp rock, funeral dirge heroin fistfuck catastrophe, that only one band can make and for only so long. And that is why The Birthday Party self-destructed in only a few years. Be sure to check out all other recorded output, studio and live.

Absolutely essential, The Birthday Party stand alone, TO this day.
