The Moonlight Tapes Compilation

Released in 1980, this compilation was recorded in 1979 at the Moonlight Club in London, England. Combining both known and unknown bands, this is a great comp. that also features The Damned appearing under the alias of The School Bullies playing "Lookin' For Another" ("Teenage Dream"). One of my favorite Damned tunes, also performed by the White Cats. Unfortunately, they never did a studio recording of it.

Being as we haven’t posted any Crass on this blog, (mainly because they’re all still in print and are very easily tracked down, and also because I’m sure all of you are well aware of Crass) figured we would start with this one.

Volume 2 of what was a series of 3 seperate compilation LP's released between 1980 and 1984 by the punk rock collective known as Crass. This combines a hodge-podge of recordings that vary in sound quality and feature plenty of great bands as well as spoken word and art reflection.

We prefer Vol. 1 of the 3 but posted Vol 2…don’t ask us why.

Released in 1982, this New York City compilation is one of my favs, capturing the true essence of outrage, dismay and dilaudid. Bands emerging outta punk rock to the budding hardcore scene litter ,,,,compliments of the chef.



In the early 80's, S.I.N. records (ran by 2 members of Ism) gathered up tapes submitted by A7 acts. A7 was an illegal club that only stayed open courtesy of bribing the local pigs, it's also renowned as being the club where a young Henry Rollins would play his first show with Black Flag.

Meathouse Compilation Tape

Not unlike Charred Remains and the obscure and sometimes noisy Try A Dull Knife, Meathouse was released by the same hardcore noise merchants. Version Sound from Xenia, Ohio (Land Of Gummo) released this blistering compilation in 1982. Featuring legendary bands from the hardcore movement like Minutemen, Battalion Of Saints, Crucifucks and the incredibly innovative Tar Babies & Mecht Mensch.

There's no doubt these cassettes inspired future cum-buckets full of punk spunk for generations to come. The select few that were fortunate enough to get this cassette back in the day would be forever indebted to the bands and to Xenia, Ohio. I dumped this from the original cassette at 320 for the best deserves the best.

Old cassette put out by Last Rites fanzine with some of America's hardcore finest: Articles of Faith, Die Kreuzen, Husker Du, Suburban Mutilation, etc... Several bands from the Chicago area, some from the midwest even a few bi-coastal bands. Tracks from the F.U.'S and others are live, while the others are studio. So the sound quality differs quite a bit. Regardless, this is another classic tape put out in 1984 that was a magnificent documentation of the then underground scene.
